The Taipei Assassins downed the Singapore Sentinels 3-1 to win the inaugural Garena Premier League season Nov. 17 in the city-state, underscoring Taiwan players’ mastery of the League of Legends online video game.
In the best-of-five final, the seven-member Taiwan team overcame its Singapore rival to claim top honor and US$10,000. The Assassins qualified for the event by competing in 40 games during the eight-month season, finishing with a 38-2 record.
“We believe our performance sets a new benchmark for Asian teams,” said Assassins captain MiSTake. “We definitely want to maintain this momentum and keep competing.”
Taipei’s victory is its second title following a World Championship win last month in Los Angeles where they defeated their South Korean opponents 3-1 to collect US$1 million in prize money.
Organized by gaming service provider Garena Online Pte. Ltd., the GPL is Southeast Asia’s first fully professional League of Legends tourney. It comprises six teams, including the Bangkok Titans, Kuala Lumpur Hunters, Manila Aguilas and Saigon Jokers. (JSM)
